Thanet District Council has announced today (Friday 22 November 2024) that 50 grants totalling over £90,000 have been awarded to local community groups.
The grants of between £1,000 and £2,000 each have been allocated through the Thanet Community Lotto Grant Fund, with additional support from Thanet’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
The full list of organisations and their awarded amounts is available on the council’s website.
The Thanet Community Lotto Grant Fund was launched in October 2024, to draw down money raised by the Thanet Community Lotto. The lotto was set up in 2017 and has so far accumulated funds of over £70,000 through ticket sales.
In September 2024, local Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) organisations were invited to bid for a grant to continue the fantastic work they do in Thanet. The fund was oversubscribed with 63 applications received. The awards have been given to organisations whose projects meet the objective of promoting ‘Pride in Place’, with over £30,000 awarded to projects specifically aimed at younger people. All of the projects in receipt of a grant will need to be completed and the funding spent by 31 December 2025.
It is hoped that the Community Lotto grants will be awarded annually, with the total sum to be distributed depending on the funding raised through lotto ticket sales.
Cllr Ruth Duckworth, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Growth at Thanet District Council said: “The role that Thanet’s voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations play in improving the lives of local people really can’t be underestimated. These grants will support 50 different projects, all of which will help to make a difference to people across the district. I would like to thank all of the organisations that continue to work so hard, and look forward to seeing how their projects progress.
“I would also encourage people who’d like to donate to local good causes to consider signing up to the Thanet Community Lotto. At least 60% from each ticket sold goes to support VCSE organisations in Thanet, and there’s the added bonus of potentially winning up to £25,000 every week.”
About the Thanet Lotto
Thanet Community Lotto was created in 2017 by Thanet District Council. It was set up to support community projects in the local area. The Lotto operates on the principle of raising money within the community for the community. It empowers local good causes to raise money in a fun and effective way.
Thanet Community Lotto enables people to support the causes they care most about, helping good causes to connect with their supporters. Thanet Community Lotto helps over 80 local good causes to generate a regular income.
A ticket for the Thanet Community Lotto costs £1 per week of which 60p goes directly to good causes in Thanet. Lotto players can nominate a good cause which then receives 50p of the 60p. The remaining 10p goes in a central pot for Thanet’s VCSE organisations.
