Green Campus

As part of the Green Port element of the awarded Levelling Up Fund, a new Green Campus will create spaces for training, enterprise and light industry along Military Road in Ramsgate.

Jan Kattein Architects have been appointed to develop initial design ideas for the Green Campus and have established an initial concept for the Green Campus using input from various existing and potential stakeholders and precedents.

The core of the Green Campus will be centred around a sociable, south-facing courtyard to foster collaboration and interchange.

At the north of the site, a 2-3 storey volume housing training and seminar spaces and a communal canteen addresses Military Road, overlooks a small arrival yard at the northeast corner, and controls entrance to the rear yard, which is sheltered from the prevailing southwest wind.

Two ‘terraces’ of workspace line the east and west sides of the courtyard. Based on a consistent module, these can be combined to create larger footprint units for anchor tenants. Loading bays along the eastern terrace provide service access to these units, with vehicle traffic excluded from the central courtyard.

First floor units are individually accessed via external walkways, minimising the extent of fully enclosed common areas.

The Green Campus will be a self-sufficient destination for enterprise and skills development. At the same time, its arrangement establishes an open, flexible core to attract future investment and expansion.

The Ramsgate Green Campus will be a public-private partnership delivering training, education and business opportunities in the marine/maritime sector. The council will deliver Blocks A & C of the Green Campus utilising Levelling Up Funding, creating the public-facing building on Military Road and flexible workspace units to the east of the site.

We are now seeking a marine/maritime tenant and developer for the area known as Block B, with a land-only lease.

Designs for the Block B building have been developed and submitted for planning approval. The plans allow for a warehouse-style, double height, open space building to accommodate boats, with a provision for office space. 

The lease is for the land only. The tenant will be fully responsible for delivering the building, according to the existing plans. Full lease terms will be negotiated between the preferred tenant/developer and the council’s Property team.

Applications are invited from maritime organisations that can demonstrate a strong social value offer and a diversification of maritime businesses at the Port of Ramsgate. The deadline for expressions of interest is Wednesday 30 October 2024

Design phases for the Green Campus have taken place and are to be exhibited at Arch 6, Military Road, Ramsgate CT11 9LG on the following days and times:

Wednesday 1 May, 2pm to 7pm

Thursday 2 May, 2pm to 5pm

Friday 3 May, 9.30am to 12pm

Tuesday 7 May, 2pm to 4pm

Thursday 9 May, 9am to 11am

There will be a number of boards on display showing the designs, with a planning application to be submitted following the public event.

From Wednesday 13 December 2023, we are inviting workspace operators to express their thoughts and register their interest in the operational model for the future of the Green Campus.

If you are an established operator or are interested in setting up a consortium to manage the Green Campus, please register your interest by completing a questionnaire on the Kent Business Portal

The deadline for completing the questionnaire is Wednesday 17 January 2024.
