Cultural Programme & Community Engagement

As part of the Ramsgate High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ), we have been awarded funding to deliver a Cultural Programme to encourage people to rediscover Ramsgate’s High Street.

The scheme draws to a close on 31st March 2024, with some activities still to take place in the final couple of months.

There were a number of opportunities for local individuals, artists and organisations to deliver elements of the overall Cultural Programme, coordinated by the council and the Ramsgate Cultural Consortium in 2023. The outcomes of this funding and the remaining projects within the scheme, can be seen below.

If you require any of this information in alternative formats including BSL, Braille, easy read and large format, please contact Elinor.seath@thanet.gov.uk

The Cultural Consortium ran a series of funding hub drop-in sessions/workshops. The sessions were delivered by the Cultural Consortium, and took place every month at the Discovery Planet site on Ramsgate High Street.

We’re extremely proud to say that, as a result of these sessions, further funding was secured through the Know Your Neighbourhood Fund for the Ramsgate Consortium to continue delivering similarly drop-ins, now know as Happy Mondays!

As part of the Ramsgate Town Study, it was identified that the wayfinding (street signage) in the town was lacking and inconsistent.

Therefore, the Cultural Consortium put out an Expression of Interest in early 2023 for a local artist or arts organisation to develop and deliver a permanent public art or creative wayfinding project along Ramsgate High Street.

The deadline for submissions of Expression of Interest was Monday 20 February 2023 and Ramsgate Town Team was the winning submission.

The installation of new monoliths and fingerposts took place in February 2024 and now give a clear and bright route into the High Street.

As part of the Cultural programme for the High Street Heritage Action Zone, a youth project was created to encourage local youth residents to create a public art exhibition.

The youth council then conducted their own research and consultation and decided to create a public art trail using ravens through the town.

‘Hraefn’s Geat’ was the first Anglo-Saxon name for Ramsgate meaning Raven’s Cliff Gap.

A competition for other local youth groups to design their own raven was launched and these designs were brought to life.

Look out for the ravens from 15th March 2024!
